Ask the Pharmacist
What happens to medicine when it expires?
While medications may not spoil like a gallon of milk, the expiration date on the label is just as important -- if not more. After the date passes, the drug may lose its potency, and become weak and ineffective. While most likely the medication is not dangerous, it’s best to always dispose of any drugs once they reach their expiration date.
Keep in mind too that the expiration date is based on proper storage of the drug. If, for instance, you don’t always tightly replace the cap after every use or you keep it in a steamy bathroom, exposure to moisture in the air may cause the drug to deteriorate more quickly. Check the package insert that comes with your medication for information on proper storage. If you can’t find storage information there, talk with your pharmacist or check the drug manufacturer’s Web site for additional help.
