A New Strain of Flu?

A New Strain of Flu?

Maybe you saw a news report on new cases of swine flu, or you spotted a headline about a strain of bird flu found in Asia. These strains are certainly scary-sounding, but it’s important to know that your child’s chances of contracting these strains are highly unlikely.

Here’s what every parent needs to know about these flu strains going into the 2011 – 2012 season:

Swine Flu
What is it?
For the past few years, H1N1 has been fairly prevalent in the U.S., but the current flu vaccine now protects against this particular strain. This year, however, a new variation called H3N2 has been identified.
What’s the risk?
Thus far, just seven people have contracted H3N2, and most of the cases had direct exposure to pigs. Antiviral medications are effective in fighting this strain.

Bird Flu
What is it?
Bird flu, or H5N1, is a type of flu predominantly found in poultry, although there have been clusters of human infections in Asia.
What’s the risk?
Although there have been a few sporadic reports, there is no indication that there will be an outbreak in the U.S.

How to Protect Your Family
As with all strains of the flu, it’s important to take the proper precautions to safeguard yourself and your family. Take the same flu precautions as you did last year. And keep reminding your kids to wash their hands religiously: before eating, after using the restroom and after blowing their nose or coughing.

A strong immune system can also help protect against the virus. As a mom, make sure that your family is logging enough sleep, drinking plenty of water and eating a healthy diet filled with fresh fruits and vegetables. Not only will these moves help protect against the flu, but they’ll also fend off colds too.

If you suspect that your child does have the flu, call your pediatrician. He or she can monitor your kid’s sickness and prescribe antiviral medications if necessary.
