Summer Camp Safety Checklist

Summer Camp Safety Checklist

Call it a rite of passage: Each year, some 11 million kids (and adults) head off to camp every year. But along with the arts, crafts and memories, campers also face a few health hazards. So before packing that duffel bag, consider this stay-well checklist:

1. Check on immunizations. Make sure your child is up-to-date on her tetanus boosters and immunizations. (For a full list, visit the American Academy of Pediatrics’ guidelines.) The meningitis vaccine is particularly important in camp’s tight quarters: This life-threatening virus can be spread through close contact with others. It’s recommended for kids starting at age 11 -- with a booster shot by age 18 -- but you should speak to your pediatrician even if your child is younger. In some cases, like if your child has a compromised immune system, the vaccine is recommended.

2. Pack the essentials. To keep your kid safe, don’t forget to pack sunscreen, hats and other sun-protective gear, bug spray, hand sanitizer, and allergy or other medications. You should also provide an inhaler, EpiPen or any other special medications to the camp staff.

3. Add a label. You probably already jotted his name on his bag and jacket, but don’t forget about marking that water bottle too: Swapping drinks and utensils spreads colds and viruses. Your child may be more tempted to share that lemonade at camp than at home, so of course remind him to not sip from his friends’ glasses or bottles.

4. Speak with the staff. Get to know the camp’s director, nurse and counselor. They should be familiar with your child’s health history, including any allergies or ailments he might have. Also ask about their emergency plans, along with the staff’s first aid or medical training.

5. Chat with your child. Before you kiss her good-bye, discuss important health habits. Remind her to wash her hands frequently, to drink water before she’s thirsty, and to apply sunscreen at least once an hour when she’s outside. You may get a few eye-rolls, but it’s worth it.
