Ask the School Nurse

Can ginger ale help my child feel better when she has an upset stomach?

Yes, ginger ale may help ease her stomach. Just note that ginger shouldn’t be given to kids under 2 years old.

Ginger is known to help with nausea, motion sickness and upset stomachs. The trick is to make sure the beverage you have actually contains real ginger. Read the ingredient list to know for sure. If your regular supermarket doesn’t have a soda with real ginger in it, check a health food store.

Have your child drink 6 to 8 ounces and then lie on her side for 15 minutes to alleviate any pressure on her stomach. The carbonation in the soda may also help your child expel gas by burping, which can make her feel better. If symptoms persist, check with your doctor. Ginger candies can also help alleviate symptoms associated with an upset stomach; one or two candies may help relieve the pain your child is experiencing.
