Ask the School Nurse

I always put sunscreen on my kids before they head to summer school, but I know they won’t reapply throughout the day. If I put sunscreen on my kids in the morning, will it last through lunch break?

If they’re inside a classroom for most of the morning and are only exposed to the sun for an hour, a single pre-school sunscreen application is generally sufficient.

However, if your kids are outside playing soccer for the entire day, ask the counselors to help them reapply sunscreen every two hours. Reapplying often is especially necessary after exercise or any water activity.

One of the best ways you can protect your kids is to apply sunscreen right. Lavish the equivalent of at least a shot glass worth of sunscreen over the entire skin and do your best to spread it evenly. Apply 30 minutes before they go outside to give the product enough time to absorb into the skin. Remember to protect those often-forgotten places too, like ears, neck and feet. And make sure to use a quality sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. I personally rely on the Consumer Reports sunscreen surveys to find the best products currently available.

If you’re concerned about your children’s exposure to the sun, don’t hesitate to talk with your summer school program coordinator. If your kids are spending a lot of time outside, it’s essential that they are encouraged to take ample breaks in the shade to rehydrate and re-sunscreen on hot summer days.
